Early life; training

Fred won 6th Form Maths Prize in 5th Form at Wanganui Collegiate. (probably about 1888)

At age 19, he was selected to represent New Zealand at rugby football, but being an apprentice couldn't afford to travel to Australia.

He spent some time in Christchurch as a "Fitter". 1896 electoral roll for Addington. 1896-97 directory: "Harrison, Frederick, Hawdon st, Sydenham". 1898-99 Directory, still in Chch.

Engineer

Then he became a Marine Engineer. 1900 electoral roll for Wanganui: "engineer", residing "River Bank". 1903 marriage to "Anna Gordon Forlong"

Then Second or Chief Engineer at various Freezing Works.

Waitara (North Taranaki). Electoral roll 1905-06: engineer, with wife Anna Gordon Harrison. (Their first child was born in 1906.) 1910 PO Directory: "Harrison FL, engnr FreezWks, Waitara".

Same electoral roll entry in 1911 and 1919 and 1921 but at Patea (South Taranaki). The second and third children were born during that period.

NZ Army WW1 reserve rolls - residence Patea, "Refrigerating Engineer"

Stone's Directory 1922-23: "Harrison, Fredk Lewis (J.P.), engr, Patea.

Some time at Whakatane (Gretta - b.1916 - remembered). Stone's Directory 1924, 1925, 1926, and 1927 for Whakatane (no address): "Harrison, Fredk L, engineer". By 1927, as noted above, his wife had died.

The 1927 directory also shows him at 6 Cavell st, Gonville, Wanganui, presumably a short-term address before his final move to the new house. One might guess that his move back to Wanganui was partly so that his children were closer to aunts and uncles. Gretta was certainly grateful to the aunts who had greatly helped her grow up.

Final employment at Wanganui Hospital (doubtless attending to pipes and boilers). From 1927 or 1928, lived at 14 Gonville Ave in house built by nephew Charlie Burrows. Electoral rolls 1928, 1935, 1938 "engineer". Robin has a photo of himself, his mother, and "Grandpa" on the front steps of that house.

Death

Probate 84/45, Wanganui, 13 Jul 1945. No other mention in NZSG Index 1999. News of his death must have added to the gloom of a Dunedin winter for his daughter. Robin (then aged 4) vaguely remembers the arrival of the messenger.

‡ General
  • Family and some census and directory data.
Ω Birth
  • When Fred's father HNH realised that the registration clerk had written "Louis" instead of the intended "Lewis" (possibly named after Louisa's half brother) and that HNH had signed the form without checking it, he made strenuous efforts to get it corrected, but to no avail. The intended middle name was later in general use regardless of the official name.
  • Documents in Joanna's possession.
