Franklin Pierce, President of the USA, was born 23 November 1804 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, United States to Benjamin Pierce (1757-1839) and Anna Kendrick (1768-1838) and died 8 October 1869 Concord, New Hampshire, United States of cirrhosis of the liver. He married Jane Means Appleton (1806-1863) 19 November 1834 in Amherst, New Hampshire, United States.

Franklin Pierce served as president of the United States from 1853-1857. He was the only president ever elected (to date) from New Hampshire, and the youngest at the time to be elected to the presidency.

His three children all died young, the last, Benjamin Pierce, dying in a train wreck outside Andover, Massachusetts while the president-elect and his family made their way to the inauguration. The loss clouded his presidency.

Pierce's term is seen as a failure by many scholars because of his inability, or unwillingness, to act to prevent the increasingly bitter slavery controversy.

He died 9 October, 1869. (See New York Times Obituary)
