Report of his death
The body of Frederick Austin, 50, night watchman, of Chelsea-avenue, Bankstown, was found floating in Blackwattle Bay early on Saturday morning. Austin, who was employed at Jones Bros.' coal yards, Pyrmont, had been missing since Monday. A watchman at Saxton's wharf noticed the body, and informed the police, and Sergeant James had it recovered and removed to the City Morgue. One leg was fractured in two places and an ankle broken. The police theory is that Austin fell between the wharf and a collier, was seriously injured, and was drowned before he could call for help.
Mrs. Ives, of East Hills, a daughter of Austin, on receipt of news that her father's body had been found, hurried to his late residence, and in her absence her home was destroyed by fire. The outbreak was beyond control when the Liverpool Fire Brigade, under Station Officer Cook, reached the house, and all that the firemen could do was to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining cottages. Mrs. Ives' home was a six-roomed cottage, built of weatherboard and fibro-cement.
