Forums: Index > Watercooler > Does this Wikia deal with the tools and methods of Genealogy

I'm new to Wikia, but familiar with Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other Wiki's. A fan of collaboration.

At a quick glance, this Genealogy Wikia seems presently to be wholly concentrated on the data of Genealogy. The people and places. Or am I missing something ?

As a person moderately new to Genealogy and slowly getting sucked in to trying to research all the BOULTs in the world (see www.boult.wetpaint.com), I need help on the tools and methods of Genealogy. Where to find data, what are the best sources. What software is best for what functions. etc.

Is this within the scope of this wikia? Should it be ?--RichardB43 00:57, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

The current focus is on people, on the tools of a geneaology wiki, and on places (in that order). The tools of genealogy are well within the scope of this wiki, but less developed. I am sure that there are a number of volunteers who would be eager to write entries on such matters. There is a list of sources: Genealogy websites rtol 07:12, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Wholly concentrated on the data of Genealogy? I wouldn't phrase it quite that way. Looking through our featured articles list, the articles we hold up as ideal are hardly centered on data. Although we are attempting to flesh out some connections of deep histories, these genealogical connections are really only the underlying skeleton upon which the flesh and blood of microhistorical narratives is placed, allowing our ancestors to speak to us more clearly through the ages. Without those narratives, there is little more than endless statistics of names, places and dates. Some further depth on this is the subject of the latest Familypedia Times blog post. ~ Phlox 02:38, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
