I've been adding categories to the pages I create, many of which are red links. Is there a way for me to create new categories or is that an admin function? Lanica 14:52, April 30, 2010 (UTC)

No, you can create categories just like any other pages. You will notice that we have templates for many of the category types (eg {{SCat}} for surname categories), and standard forms for various others. Be bold (I will probably polish any that I think need it). Thurstan 06:25, May 1, 2010 (UTC)
See Help:Category. And see our shortcuts for county-related categories. I've just used {{cm-us}}, for example. (I wondered whether I would remember how to, after months of not using any, but I got it right first time, so you should have no trouble remembering them after a brief familiarization!) — Robin Patterson (Talk) 15:36, May 2, 2010 (UTC)
Listing of individuals in their SURNAME categories should be by first name, not surname. It seems you have been overriding our template that does that, when you use {{Categories}}, which until a few minutes ago included "surname" without adjusting for that order. Check your recent people, e.g. Category:Ockenfels (surname). Thank you for creating this forum, which looked like a minor point but which has helped me see where you and other contributors may have been getting wrong order without realising it or without knowing how. I have asked other major contributors why so many people were being listed under surnames. Many were because we didn't see the error in the "showfacts person" template until last month. But remaining cases probably stem from {{Categories}} and may be fixable if we check its "What links here" page. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 16:22, May 2, 2010 (UTC)
Robin, you're {{Categories}} template seems to be fine. I've been putting a space after the '=' just as I had done for the ':' in the cemetery page you just commented on. If I remove the space it alphabetizes correctly...by first name within category. Lanica 23:46, May 2, 2010 (UTC)
