Sarah Elizabeth Lincoln Grigsby was born 10 February 1807 in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky, United States to Thomas Lincoln (1778-1851) and Nancy Hanks (1784-1818) and died 20 January 1828 Little Pigeon Creek Community, Spencer County, Indiana, United States of unspecified causes. She married Aaron Grigsby (1801-1832) 2 August 1826 in Spencer County, Indiana, United States.
Sarah Elizabeth Lincoln Grigsby was the Daughter of Thomas Lincoln (1778-1851) & Nancy Hanks (1784-1818), sister of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16th US President. Wife of Aaron Grigsby.
She was only 11 years old when her mother died and she then had to assume all of the motherly duties in the Lincoln household - cooking, cleaning, washing, mending, spinning wool. Fortunately for Sarah, she had good neighbors that came over to help her out.
She was described as a good-natured, amiable, gentle, intelligent, hard-working, dark-skinned, heavyset girl. Austin Gollaher, who was quite fond of Sarah, described her as "just as pretty as Abe was homely," with "big brown eyes and curly chestnut hair."
Family legend holds that she died from complications of childbirth and the only doctor in the region was too drunk to attend to her. She was buried with her infant in her arms in the Little Pigeon Baptist Church cemetery, which is located today in Lincoln State Park. Her husband, Aaron is buried beside her.
