Faridabad district (Hindi: फरीदाबाद जिला) is one of the 21 districts in Haryana, and Faridabad city is the district headquarters. Delhi-Mathura National Highway No.2 (Shershah Suri Marg) passes through the centre of the District. The district occupies an area of 2151 km². The district has a population of 2,193,276 (2001 census). This district is part of Gurgaon Division.
As of 2011 it is the most populous district of Haryana (out of 21).[1]
Origin of name[]
The district is named after its headquarters, Faridabad city. The city is named after its founder, Shaikh Farid, the treasurer of Jahangir.When Sheik Farid came here,he decided to raise a town here.Soon a town was raised which was named after him.On Talab Road near Gopi Colony (Old Faridabad),his beautiful tomb or `maqbara' can still be seen.
History[]
This district was carved out from erstwhile Gurgaon district 15 August 1979.
Economy[]
Faridabad was one of the leading industrial cities of Haryana, a popular choice for setting up industry due to its proximity to Delhi and its location on the Delhi - Mathura road. Much before the advent of Gurgaon as the posterboy for industrial development in Haryana, Faridabad was the favourite destination of Industries.Faridabad is famous for Heena Production on agriculture sector while tractors, motorcycles, switch gears, refrigerators, shoes and tyres are other famous industrial products of the city.
However, in recent times it has fallen much behind the neighbouring towns of Noida, Okhla and Gurgaon in attracting new industry. The IT revolution has completely bypassed Faridabad, opting for the cities of Noida or Gurgaon instead. In part this was due to government apathy, in part due to the rising levels of pollution and congestion in the city.

According to the 2011 census Faridabad district has a population of 1,798,954,[1] roughly equal to the nation of The Gambia[2] or the US state of Nebraska.[3] This gives it a ranking of 266th in India (out of a total of 640).[1] The district has a population density of 2,298 inhabitants per square kilometre (5,950 /sq mi) .[1] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 31.75 %.[1] Faridabad has a sex ratio of 871 females for every 1000 males,[1] and a literacy rate of 83 %.[1]faridabad is dominated by gujjar,jat and yadav comunity.
