This is a complete list of language codes recognized by the wikimedia engine. For smooth operation of multilingual capabilities, only these codes should be used in Familypedia. For further information about standards for multilingual articles, see Genealogy:Language policy.

Language suffixes are used to indicate the language for all pages other than the Category wikipedia:Namespace. Pages without suffixes are to be in the English language. {For now, category pages may not have suffixes, and multilingual content should be indicated on the same page.) Examples of the language suffix convention in use:

NotesEdit

  • This list omits deprecated and non functional code. Some but not all codes intended for notational use rather than collections of encyclopedic content (such as for Austrian German or British English) were also omitted in the interests of space and may be restored to this list from the source listed below if any use of them is required. Although contributors are encouraged to contribute in the language of their choosing, if they wish to reach the widest possible audience, it is advisable to focus on common dialects rather than more obscure variants for articles (eg: Anglo-Saxon "Old English").
