Current standard is illustrated by Category:Died in 2004; it now has as its whole edited content the same brief info as on Wikipedia:Category:2004 deaths, ie:

(Easy enough to see the pattern.) That produces:
| Died in the 2000s: | 2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005-2006-2007-2008-2009 |
This page categorizes the people who died in 2004.

Still under discussion in 2007 was whether we keep the form "Deaths in 2004" or go the Wikipedia way with "2004 deaths". See Forum:Births by Year/Deaths by Year. Contributors were invited to join the discussion and to do as few such categories as possible until the style was really decided.
We decided to change to "Born in", "Died in", etc.
Precision or lack of it[]
From about 2013, our person templates have been tweaked to insert pages automatically into birth and death year categories. They include pages for people whose year was stated to be "bef" or "c" or "aft" the specific year.
