Family tradition says she was an illegitimate daughter of Francis Wemyss-Charteris, 9th Earl of Wemyss (1796-1883). His recorded children were born between 1818 and 1833. DNA comparison with one of his proven descendants might shed light.
The note from a descendant was:
Eupemia Hunt (ne Robson or Robertson) is by family lore to have been "the illegitimate child of the Earl of Wemyss who saw to her education." She was born 14 Feb 1834, married Thomas William Hunt in 1855, and died in Aucklan, NZ, on 3 May 1911. The Hunt family (inc. 9 children) went out to NZ in 1883 and again a bit of family lore – that their trip may have been enabled by a small inheritance from the Will of the 9th Earl. I wonder if their is any record of the relationship of Euphemia to the Earl of Wemyss, a provision for her education, and perhaps even a mention in his Will. I would be very grateful for any insights you might offer or other avenues to pursue. Euphemia was raised in Inverness and ulitmately lived with Thomas Hunt at Thronington Farm in Kirknewton, Northumberland, before emigrating.
