Biography

Elon Huntington Hooker was born 23 November 1869 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, United States to Horace B Hooker (1837-1915) and Susan Pamelia Huntington (1841-1928) and died 10 May 1938 Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California, United States of unspecified causes. He married Blanche Ferry (1871-1956) 25 January 1901 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, United States.

He received his early education in the public schools of Rochester, and continued his technical training in the night schools of the Mechanics Institute. He then went to the University of Rochester, from which he graduated in 1891. Later he studied at Cornell University, where he obtained the degree of PH.D., and gained a travelling fellowship which allowed him to go abroad and continue his studies in hydraulics at the Zurich Polytechnicum and the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees, Paris. Returning to this country he spent several years in engineering work in the field, and was one of a commission of contracting engineers who inspected the Panama and Nicaragua Canal routes in 1898. He was appointed by Governor Roosevelt deputy superintendent of public works in the State of New York, and was engaged, among other duties, in the investigation of the expenditure of nine million dollars in the improvement of the Erie Canal system. In 1901 he resigned to engage in timber, mining and railroad enterprises in the Southwest. Two years later he organized and became president of the Development and Funding Company, building and operating engineering and industrial enterprises. Afterward he with others formed the Hooker Electrochemical Company, a concern which has a large manufacturing plant at Niagara Falls, produces caustic soda and chloride of lime, and has proved a great success.
In the presidential campaign of 1912 he was treasurer of the National Progressive party.
