Ellen was raised by her grandmother Mary Hebburn (c1806-1888).
In 1891 she was working as a barmaid at "The Cricketers", Chertsey, owned by her uncle Arthur Charles Hebburn (1853-1921) and aunt Annie Wright Casson (1861-1918). Her future husband Alfred Smith, then a butler, was visiting the family.
