Ellen Derby Peabody Eliot was born 1836 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio to Ephraim Peabody (1804-1856) and Mary Jane Derby (1807-) and died 13 March 1869 Massachusetts of tuberculosis. She married Charles William Eliot (1834-1926) 1858 in Massachusetts.
Ellen Derby Peabody, daughter of Unitarian minister Ephraim Peabody, died the same year that her husband became president of Harvard University.
After Ellen Derby Peabody died at the age of 33 of tuberculosis, Eliot married a second wife in 1877, Grace Mellen Hopkinson (1846–1924). This second marriage did not produce any children. Grace was a close relative of Frances Stone Hopkinson, wife of Samuel Atkins Eliot II, his son.
