In 1851, Elizabeth Jane (<1) lived with parents John (32) and Mary (44), along with sisters Mary (8) and Sarah (6) in Beertown (Beer Ferris), Devon, where her father worked as a bargeman.[1]
By 1861, all of Elizabeth's (10) siblings were out on their own. The family still resided in in Beer Ferris, and her father was now captain of a barge.[2] On 5 January 1867, Elizabeth (16) attended the marriage of sister Sarah Jane Northey in Beer Town.[3]
