This family were some of the 700+ Passengers of the Winthrop Fleet which sailed from England to settle the Massachusetts Bay Colony at Salem in 1630 under the guidance of Gov. John Winthrop. It is reported that during the first year nearly 200 of these colonists died and another 100 returned to England. The remaining settlers either stayed in Salem or moved on to Boston or Watertown.
The oldest of William Baulstone (1605-1678) children, Elizabeth, appears to be the only to have survived childhood. Born about 1628, Elizabeth married first, on 17 June 1647, John Coggeshall (1624-1708) later a deputy governor of the colony and son of colonial president John Coggeshall (1601-1665). This marriage ended in divorce in 1654, after which Elizabeth married Thomas Gould, the son of Jeremiah Gould and Priscilla Grover. Elizabeth had three children with her first husband, and died sometime after 1696.
