Elbert Clifton Daniel was born 19 September 1912 in Zebulon, Wake County, North Carolina, United States to Elbert Clifton Daniel (1884-1968) and Elvah T. Jones (1891-1971) and died 21 February 2000 Park Avenue, Manhattan, New York County, New York, United States of heart disease, stroke. He married Mary Margaret Truman (1924-2008) 21 April 1956 in Trinity Episcopal Church, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, United States.
He was the managing editor of The New York Times from 1964 to 1969. Before assuming the top editorial job at the paper, he served as the paper's London and Moscow bureau chief.
