Early Columbus "Earl" Vickery was among the oldest children of William "Eddie" Vickery and Martha Ann Powell. He was born near Hartwell, GA. It is said that around 1887, the family moved to Marion Co., AL, but Eddie moved back to Hartwell after Martha's death. Then, between 1903 and 1905, Earl moved back to Marion Co. with his inlaws. My grandmother said they took a wagon and made the trip, usually spending the nights at local churches along the route. It took several weeks.

Earl took up farming and also became a deputy sheriff. Most notable among his policing duties was the removal of moonshine stills. At first, he brought them in intact, but began to suspect that these same stills were returning. He then began destroying the stills with an ax before bringing them in. He is said to have remarked that there was no guideline as to what condition the still should be brought in. This activity was bound to be unpopular, and my grandmother said occasionally people would drive by their home, chant "Hang Earl Vickery from a sour apple tree" and shoot out the tires of his car.

Amazingly, Earl Vickery lived to be an old man. My mother remembered him using his cane to shift a cat's tail to where it would catch on fire. Panicked, the cat tore through their house. Earl laughed as it ran around in a panic. Finally, he had to be moved to a nursing home near some of his children. There he died at the ripe old age of 91. My sister has an old rocking chair is supposed to have been his.
