Hawkins was born 17 May 1852 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, United States to Washington Jackson Hawkins (1825-1860) and Mary Ann Abigail Sharp (1829-1910) and died 27 June 1936 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, United States of unspecified causes. He married Alice M. Carter (1856-1880) 30 October 1871 in Sonoma County, California. He married Mattie Laurine Clapp (1864-1908) 16 October 1883 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, California.
Charles W. Hawkins was a minister in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly referred then to the RLDS Church. See Documents for further information on that. When Lawrence Everett Hawkins and Edith Evelyn Cole decided to get married in 1931, they called on Charles W. Hawkins to perform the marriage. He was Lawrence's Uncle. Later, in 1944, Lawrence and Edith had a son born, and they decided to name him after the man who married them. This information was told to Charles E. Hawkins by his mother, Edith Evelyn (Cole) Hawkins when he was a teenager.
