Obituary

MR. CHARLES E. HERMANN

BALLINA, Tuesday.

At the age of 73 years, Mr. Charles Edward Hermann died suddenly at his home in Brunswick-street yesterday afternoon. He led an active life and returned from fishing only a few minutes before his death. The late Mr. Hermann was a well-known resident of the Lower Richmond district, where he engaged in the sugar industry.

He was born at Wyrallah in 1867, but moved to German Creek, now Empire Vale, at the age of 23 years. He commenced sugar cane growing and after marrying Miss May Robins in 1896 moved to Pimlico, where he again successfully engaged in cane growing. About 10 years ago he retired to live at Ballina.

The late Mr. Hermann was a keen worker for the Methodist Church, of which he was a trustee for the Ballina circuit. Until a few years ago he was a regular member of the church choir. He was a regular visitor to the Ballina bowling green and played in a number of inter-club fixtures. Last Saturday he visited Lismore with a number of Ballina rinks and played on the green at that centre. In his early days he was a keen cricket and tennis player.

He was a member of the old Ballina District Hospital committee of management. The late Mr. Hermann had been a member of Lodge Ewen Mackinnon for longer than any other surviving member, and he was a trustee for the lodge.

He is survived by a widow, four sons—Messrs. Carl E. (Pimlico), Sidney (Sydney), Ernest (Kempsey), and Ashley Hermann (Sydney), and three daughters—Mesdames A. Eckford (Kempsey), S. Cohen (Sydney), and R. K. Sharp (Brisbane).

At the funeral service in the Methodist Church this afternoon Rev. E. G. Conibear stated that the crowded church was an eloquent tribute to the long association of Mr. Hermann with the Lower Richmond district. He paid a tribute to the interest of the deceased in the church and added that he had seldom missed a service. Mr. Conibear also officiated at the grave side, where a Masonic service was read by V. Wor. Bro. A, E. Ellis. Pallbearers at the church were Messrs. G. and M. Robins, J. and L. Johnson, G. Hermann and J. Lew, while members of the Masonic Lodge acted at the graveside at East Ballina cemetery. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Charles Henderson.
