He served as an airplane mechanic. The oral family tradition was that he took an airplane for a ride without permission and was punished by being lowered in rank.

In 1920 Clifford appears in the census living in Buffalo, New York with Millie V. Van Steenburg (1896-?) as his wife. Millie was the daughter of Anna M. (1872-?) and Edward Van Steenburg (1871-?) who was a carpenter at an automobile factory. Millie had a brother: Roy Van Steenburg (1903-?) who worked as a chauffeur for a private family. Carl was working as a machinist at an airplane factory.
