Canute Peterson was born 7 May 1824 in Eidfjord, Hordaland, Vestlandet, Norway to Peder Jonson (1793-1836) and Herborg Knudsen (1792-1848) and died 14 October 1902 Ephraim, Sanpete County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Ann Nelson (1827-1896) 2 July 1849 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. He married Gjertrud Marie Bentsdatter (1830-1914) 9 November 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. He married Charlotte Amelia Ekstrom (1844-1934) 2 February 1867 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.

Canute Peterson served as first stake president of the Sanpete Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sanpete Stake - Organized 4 Jul 1877 (17th Stake of the Church) - Canuete Peterson - Discontinued in 9 Dec 1900 with the stake being split into Sanpete North and Sanpete South Stakes. Today there are 7 stakes in the Sanpete Valley. Canute continued as president of the Sanpete South stake, which is now know at Manti Utah Stake, until his death in 1902. [1]
