Căminar (plural căminari) was a historical rank traditionally held by boyars in Moldavia and Wallachia who were in charge of collecting the taxes from the taverns and country inns. Initially, in the middle ages, the căminars were in charge of collecting the taxes on bee wax.[1] The tax collected was called camănă in Moldavia and căminărit in Wallachia. Part of this tax went to the treasury and part was kept by the căminar.
In the XVII-th century the rank of mare căminar (great căminar) was also created. During the reign of Dimitrie Cantemir the great căminar was included among the great boyars and starting 1763 the great căminar was member of the Sfatul domnesc (princely council), being ranked twevth as importance.
