Benjamin Stephenson was born 14 January 1824 in Evan, New South Wales, Australia to William Stephenson (1788-1876) and Mary Landers (1803-1888) and died 4 May 1883 Dapto, New South Wales, Australia of sanguineous apoplexy. He married Hannah Warn (1827-1881) 24 January 1851 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.

"Beef cattle were raised, some to be sent to markets in other colonies and others to be sent through Goulburn to the Sydney markets. They were driven in by road and rested in the Sooley paddocks around Kingsdale before trucking. Benjamin Stephenson was one of the district's noted pioneer overlanders who drove cattle from New South Wales to the Victorian markets - journeys which were fraught with hardship. It was estimated that there were 37,000 head of cattle in the district in 1899."

SUDDEN DEATH - We regret to hear that Mr. Benjamin Stephenson, a very old resident of the Crookwell district, died very suddenly yesterday.
On Thursday, it is stated, he was at work in the field sowing wheat, and retired to rest in his usual health; yesterday morning he was found in his bed in a fit, from which he never rallied. An inquest will be held today.

DEATH: I regret to have to refer to the death of the late Mr. B. Stephenson, as already noted in your paper. He was found in bed on Friday morning in a fit, after having on the previous day done a moderate day's sowing, and retiring to rest in his usual good health. Medical attendance was sent for to Goulburn, local assistance also having been obtained, bu the nature of the attack precluded the possibility of any relief, and the deceased succumbed at about a quarter to one.
The late Mr. B. Stephenson was one of the oldest residents about here, being quite a pioneer in this and the Lachlan districts, in the latter of which he formed one or two stations in the early days.
He was a native of the colony, and was a little over fifty-nine years of age at his death. He was generally esteemed in the district for his upright and honourable character.
The funeral took place on Sunday last, when a large concourse of relative and friends followed teh deceased to his last resting place, and had it not been for the very inclement weather, there is no doubt the attendance would have been more than doubled.
INQUEST: An inquest was held on the above case on Saturday last before Mr. W. S. Gunn, coroner, the evidence of Dr. Gentle, government medical officer, was to the effect that deceased died from sanguineous apoplexy, Verdict accordingly.
