Birth[]

Annetje was born 1608 in Oedenbroek, Altenbruch, Germany, to parents Barent Van Rotmer (?-?) and Geesje Barents ? (?-?)

The only documentation is that Annetje Barents married in 1632. In March 1632 in her marriage banns, she state she was 24 years old, therefore she was born before March 1698, her father's Christian name was "Barent" she originates from Altenbruch Lower Sexony, Germany. The German name for Barent could be "Bernhard" or "Berndt"

"Gessel Baerens" is assisting her daughter Annetje Baerents van Oudenbrath with her marriage banns in 1632.

Gessel/Geesje Barents could also have a father name Barent or she is recorded with her husband's Christian name, making her Gessel Barents, a practice that appears at times until later 1600's.

"Gesje Pieters" makes a will with husband "Pieter" Jacobsen of Ft. Orange born in Rensdburgh... in 1642, naming Annetje "Alberts" as heir. (Annetje Barents married to Albert Andriesses)

There is no documentation for Barent.

There is no documentation that he used "van Rotmers/Rottmersz,Rolmer etc."

"nnetje Barents"is the only original recording. She is NOT recorded as "van Rotmer"

These surnames appear only ininterpretive notes in some publications NOT in original documents.

Annetje's brother was ONCE recorded as "Baerent Baerents Rotmer" in 1644 at baptismal of his child in Amsterdam.

Marriage[]

On April 11, 1632, Annetje married Albert Andrieszen Bradt (1607-1686) in the Netherlands.

The known children of Albert and Annetje are as follows:

  • Aefje Albertszen Bradt (1633-c1689)
  • Barent Albertszen Bradt (1634-1716)
  • Storm Albertszen Bradt (1636-?)
  • Engeltje Albertszen Bradt (1637-?)

  • Andries Albertszen Bradt (1642-?)

  • Dirck Albertszen Bradt (1650-?)

Immigration to New York[]

Annetje immigrated to New York by the ship "Rinselaers Wijck" on March 4, 1637. She was accompanied by her husband and her first three children, one of whom, Storm, was born on the ship, November 2, 1636, the voyage being a stormy one. Annetje settled with her husband in the colony of Rensselaerswyck and gave birth to five additional children.

Occupation[]

Annetje was a vital part of her husband Albert's tobacco operation, and she was allowed wages for her work. It appears her duties were to do the cooking, washing, and cleaning for the farm helpers. In addition, she tended a garden and domestic animals.

Death[]

Annetje died 1661 in Albany, New York.

Nationality[]

There is a possibility that Annetje was Danish as Christian Barents from Holstein looked after the interests her husband had in new Amsterdam in 1655, the supposition being then that she was a sister of Barents. It is probable, however, that she was Norwegian.
