(This is the main page about the Scottish town called "Wigtoun" in the Scots language and formerly known as Wigton. For historical matters concerning it, particularly former residents named "Walker" see Wigton, Scotland. It should not be confused with Wigton, Cumbria.)
Wigtown is a town of about a thousand people in the Machars of Galloway in south-west Scotland. It is known as "Scotland's National Book Town".
The sheriffdom existed as long ago as the Battle of Largs, fought in 1263. Wigtown has the country's oldest grammar school.
